Why Visit Lulworth Cove?

Lulworth Cove is a sheltered, picturesque bay on the Jurassic Coast, famous for its unique rock formations, clear turquoise waters, and dramatic cliffs. It's one of my favourite places to anchor, offering a peaceful spot to swim, paddleboard, or just relax on deck. You can also take the tender ashore to grab an ice cream or a drink at a local pub.
Getting There
Lulworth is around 7 nautical miles from Weymouth, and depending on wind conditions, we can typically sail there in about an hour. If we have to tack, it might take longer, but that’s part of the adventure! Either way, I always allow around 1 hour 30 minutes to reach the cove comfortably.
Best Weather for the Trip
For the best experience, we need a wind direction that keeps the cove calm and comfortable. A westerly to easterly breeze is ideal, while a strong southerly wind can make anchoring tricky. Even on calm days, I always check previous weather patterns to ensure the swell won’t make it too choppy.
Sailing to Lulworth
Whenever possible, I like to sail rather than motor. Lulworth lies due east of Weymouth, meaning if the wind is from the east, we’ll have to tack, making for a longer but more exciting journey. If the wind is from the west, we’ll have a smooth sail one way and may need to motor back. A northerly wind is great for flat waters, but it can be a bit gusty, making sailing more dynamic. My personal favourite? A force 4-5 from the south—great sailing, but not ideal for anchoring at Lulworth.
Sailing Past Durdle Door

One of the highlights of this trip is passing Durdle Door, one of the most iconic landmarks on the Jurassic Coast. It’s the perfect spot for a memorable photo, and we’ll get close enough for you to take in its beauty from the sea.
What to Do in Lulworth
If you’re on a 4-hour trip, you’ll have about an hour to enjoy Lulworth. That’s enough time for a swim, a glass of fizz, and a quick bite to eat. If you want a more leisurely experience, I recommend an 8-hour trip. That way, you can swim, paddleboard, and even take the tender ashore to explore, grab a pint, and enjoy the village atmosphere before sailing back.
Trip Timings
For an 8-hour trip, we usually depart on the 10am bridge lift and return at 6pm. This gives you a relaxed start and a scenic sail back, arriving in Weymouth just in time to turn heads as we glide under the bridge. If you prefer a shorter trip, you can choose a morning or afternoon 4-hour sail.
